Mark A. Butler, Sheriff

Meet the Sheriff
Greetings, I am Mark Butler, and I am honored to serve as the Sheriff of the citizens of Warren County, Virginia. I was born and raised in the Commonwealth of Virginia, mostly in the Northern Virginia region. At the age of 17 I left home and joined the United States Army, and my career was in the elite 82nd Airborne Division. Just as I was ready to be promoted to Staff Sergeant, at the age of 22, I was in an accident and told I would never use my right arm again. I subsequently left the Army as a disabled veteran and worked to become a police officer. I started my career in Law Enforcement with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Officer in Correction, Court Security, Transportation and subsequently moved to Criminal Investigations Unit and Patrol. In 2006 I left Fairfax County and became an Officer with Herndon Police Department. I served almost 13 years in patrol, Special Problems Unit, Detective (organized crime), Under Cover Agent with DHS, excelling in stopping Human Trafficking, Gangs and Narcotics interdiction. Thanks for the citizens of Warren County I was elected Sheriff in November 2019. I have received training in General Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Protestor Violence, Discriminatory Profiling & Professional Traffic Stops, Hand to Hand Combat, Crisis Prevention and Intervention, Crisis Intervention, Field Training Officer, Tactical Trauma Response, Deviant Groups, Domestic Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Active Shooter Response, Search Warrants, Intelligence Analysis & Source Development, Interview and Interrogation, Drug Identification & Field Testing as well as Domestic Violence Investigation and Intervention. I also owned and operated my own business teaching In-Service training for law enforcement in the Commonwealth as well as many other states that included how to identify criminal activities such as MS-13, Human Trafficking, Smuggling, Narcotics and Tactical Operations.
I currently reside in Front Royal, Virginia with my wife and we have resided in Warren County for over 22 years. I have three adult children and two grandchildren. Both of my sons served in the United States Military and all of my children reside in Warren County.
