Meet the Sheriff

Greet­ings, I am Mark But­ler, and I am hon­ored to serve as the Sher­iff of the cit­i­zens of War­ren Coun­ty, Vir­ginia.  I was born and raised in the Com­mon­wealth of Vir­ginia, most­ly in the North­ern Vir­ginia region.  At the age of 17 I left home and joined the Unit­ed States Army, and my career was in the elite 82nd Air­borne Divi­sion.  Just as I was ready to be pro­mot­ed to Staff Sergeant, at the age of 22, I was in an acci­dent and told I would nev­er use my right arm again.  I sub­se­quent­ly left the Army as a dis­abled vet­er­an and worked to become a police offi­cer.  I start­ed my career in Law Enforce­ment with the Fair­fax Coun­ty Sheriff’s Offi­cer in Cor­rec­tion, Court Secu­ri­ty, Trans­porta­tion and sub­se­quent­ly moved to Crim­i­nal Inves­ti­ga­tions Unit and Patrol.  In 2006 I left Fair­fax Coun­ty and became an Offi­cer with Hern­don Police Depart­ment.  I served almost 13 years in patrol, Spe­cial Prob­lems Unit, Detec­tive (orga­nized crime), Under Cov­er Agent with DHS, excelling in stop­ping Human Traf­fick­ing, Gangs and Nar­cotics inter­dic­tion.  Thanks for the cit­i­zens of War­ren Coun­ty I was elect­ed Sher­iff in Novem­ber 2019.  I have received train­ing in Gen­er­al Instruc­tor, Defen­sive Tac­tics Instruc­tor, Pro­tes­tor Vio­lence, Dis­crim­i­na­to­ry Pro­fil­ing & Pro­fes­sion­al Traf­fic Stops, Hand to Hand Com­bat, Cri­sis Pre­ven­tion and Inter­ven­tion, Cri­sis Inter­ven­tion, Field Train­ing Offi­cer, Tac­ti­cal Trau­ma Response, Deviant Groups, Domes­tic Ter­ror­ism, Human Traf­fick­ing, Active Shoot­er Response, Search War­rants, Intel­li­gence Analy­sis & Source Devel­op­ment, Inter­view and Inter­ro­ga­tion, Drug Iden­ti­fi­ca­tion & Field Test­ing as well as Domes­tic Vio­lence Inves­ti­ga­tion and Inter­ven­tion.  I also owned and oper­at­ed my own busi­ness teach­ing In-Ser­vice train­ing for law enforce­ment in the Com­mon­wealth as well as many oth­er states that includ­ed how to iden­ti­fy crim­i­nal activ­i­ties such as MS-13, Human Traf­fick­ing, Smug­gling, Nar­cotics and Tac­ti­cal Operations.

I cur­rent­ly reside in Front Roy­al, Vir­ginia with my wife and we have resided in War­ren Coun­ty for over 22 years.  I have three adult chil­dren and two grand­chil­dren.  Both of my sons served in the Unit­ed States Mil­i­tary and all of my chil­dren reside in War­ren County. 

I was elect­ed Sher­iff of War­ren Coun­ty in Novem­ber, 2019 and took office Jan­u­ary, 2020. War­ren Coun­ty Sheriff’s Office cov­ers 214 square miles and employ­ees 94 sworn and non-sworn per­son­nel.  I am a mem­ber of the RSW Region­al Jail board. I am grate­ful to be the Sher­iff of such an amaz­ing com­mu­ni­ty and to have a ded­i­cat­ed group of hard work­ing and tal­ent­ed employ­ees. Togeth­er WE make the difference.
