Warren County, VA - With the arrival of warmer weather there has been an increase in the number of people who are endangering themselves by going onto the tracks of the railroad for purposes other than to cross at a legal crossing. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with Norfolk Southern Police would like to remind everyone that trespassing on railroad property is forbidden by Virginia law. Trespassing on a railroad track is punishable of a Class 4 misdemeanor for the first offense, with the punishment enhanced for each subsequent violation up to a Class 1 misdemeanor (confinement in jail for not more that twelve months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both). Those who trespass after being forbidden to do so, either orally, in writing, or by signs, are subject to being charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor.
